Ashley’s Law and a Mom’s Story
Have you heard about Ashley’s law? Would you do anything for your child to experience a normal childhood with relief from their chronic pain? In today’s podcast, you’ll hear about Maureen Surin’s story and how she and her husband Jim have done everything in their power to make sure their daughter Ashley can live her life pain-free!
In December 08, 2008 the Surins family received terrifying news. Their daughter Ashley was diagnosed with leukemia cancer at the age of 2 years old. They started chemotherapy in December of 2008. Within 9 months of chemo treatment Ashley started to develop seizures. At this point doctors put Ashley onto neuro meds for seizures thinking it was temporary. At this point Ashley needed her parents to shadow her 24/7 to take care of her. With Ashley getting older the doctors prescribed more medicine. With the medicine and seizures getting more intense she started to have issues with mobility, balance and speech.
However, March 2011 the Surins tides started to turn. Their daughter beat leukemia at the age of 5 years old. But this still was not the end of their healing process. Ashley still continued to have seizures with the increasing severity.
In 2017 there was a turning point…
Ashley had suffered from a concussion and needed brain surgery. Maureen said “At this point we have to do something different or we won’t have our daughter here with us”. This prompted the Surins to explore the natural approaches to medicine. Two different doctor clinics recommended to start using hemp and a low keto diet.
Within just a few months they noticed that the hemp was drastically helping Ashley’s seizures. The doctors continued working with the Surins to try to get rid of the seizures all together. This involved the next step into medical marijuana consumption.
Ashley is now 3 1/2 years seizure free with the use of medical marijuana. Maureen simply just puts a patch on Ashley’s foot each day that has slow release cbd and gives here a drop of RSO every night.
